STV Building
Scottish Television bought the Theatre Royal Glasgow in 1957 to serve as their television studios. This image, taken from Hope Street, shows the Theatre Royal building as the home of STV. In the bottom left hand-corner of the photograph the STV local – the Top Spot bar – can be seen.

Arthur Montford
Arthur Montford presented STV’s flagship sports programme Scotsport for 32 years, until his retirement in 1989. During his Scotsport presenting career, Montford became known for his catchphrases, including “Glorious goal!”, “What a stramash!” and, all too regularly, “Disaster for Scotland”!

Francie & Josie
Comedy duo Jack Milroy and Rikki Fulton were the stars of Francie & Josie. The characters they played were based on the Glaswegian Teddy Boys of the 1960s. Francie & Josie became household favourites with their trademark ‘banter’ and the catchphrase “are ye dancin’?”

Glen Michael’s Cartoon Cavalcade, 1966
In 1966 Glen Michael’s Cartoon Cavalcade began its 26 year run on STV. Presenter Glen Michael is pictured here with dogs Rudi and Rusti who were his companions on the show. A particularly popular section of the Cartoon Cavalcade was the slot during which Michael read out birthday card messages sent in by viewers.

Jack Buchanan opens the new STV studios at the Theatre Royal
Helensburgh-born Hollywood star Jack Buchanan officially opened the STV television studios at the Theatre Royal on 31 August 1957. That evening during STV’s first live broadcast Buchanan stood on the stage of what was now Theatre Royal Studio ‘A’ and shared his memories of the theatre, while admiring its transformation into a state-of-the-art television studio.

The Jack Milroy Show: Jack Milroy & Charlie Sim
As well as being one half of Francie & Josie, Jack Milroy also had his own STV comedy programme. The Jack Milroy Show featured sketches in which Milroy played a variety of characters, often alongside guest stars. Pictured here with Milroy is Charlie Sim, one of the members of The One O’Clock Gang.

Jig Time, 1963
The Jig Time cast, with presenter Jimmy Nairn to the right of the group, posing with guests from the show. At the centre of the group stands the famous Scottish baritone, Bill McCue. McCue later returned to the Theatre Royal stage as a regular performer with Scottish Opera.

Romper Room, 1967: Lesley Blair
Lesley Blair began her career with STV as a continuity announcer and went on to present a number of different shows including Lesley, Cartoon Cavalcade and Romper Room. Romper Room, pictured here, was franchised from the original American version. The tradition of the presenter being referred to as ‘Miss’ meant that Lesley was known as Miss Lesley throughout the programme’s run.

Roundup, 1963: Morag Hood & Paul McCartney
Roundup was a magazine show for young people broadcast on STV that featured many celebrity guests, including The Beatles who appeared on Roundup three times early in their career. This image shows Paul McCartney in the Theatre Royal studio assisting Roundup presenter Morag Hood as she applies her makeup.

The Scotsport Team
On air for 51 years from 1957 until 2008, Scotsport remains one of the world’s longest-running sports shows. Pictured here is one of the first Scotsport teams: Bob Crampsey, Arthur Montford, Archie Aikman and Alex Cameron.

Studio Downbeat
Presented by Raymond Boyd, Studio Downbeat was a jive and twist contest that saw dance clubs from across Scotland compete against each other. This particular image shows teams from Dundee and Glasgow in competition.

The Alexander Brothers, 1960
The Alexander Brothers were a Scottish music duo comprising brothers Tom and Jack Alexander. Tom is pictured here on the accordion, with Jack at the piano. This photograph was taken during a performance by the brothers on STV in 1960. Later they starred in their own television show, The Alexander Brothers Show, which aired on STV from 1965 to 1976.

Over to Una: Una McLean
Actress, singer and comedienne Una McLean starred in STV’s Over to Una from 1965 to 1969, alongside Cartoon Cavalcade star, Glen Michael. Over to Una featured ‘Una from Poona’ singing and performing sketches with regular co-stars and guests.

Unknown fireman attending the STV fire, 1969
Disaster struck on the 3 November 1969 when the STV studios at the Theatre Royal when an electrical fault led to a fire in the building. Tragically, fireman Sub Officer Archie McClay lost his life fighting the fire. A memorial to Archie can be seen on Hope Street, just outside the Theatre Royal, as part of Glasgow’s Firefighter Heritage Trail.
