The Rake’s Progress, 2012
Sir David McVicar’s production of Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, with designs by John Macfarlane, premiered at the Theatre Royal in 2012. In this image Edgaras Montvidas as Tom Rakewell is seen walking towards Karen Murray as Mother Goose.

Sir Alexander Gibson
Sir Alexander Gibson gained a scholarship to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, which provided the foundation for his prestigious career as a conductor and Music Director for Sadler’s Wells Opera Company. In 1962, Gibson fulfilled a life-long ambition, establishing a national Opera Company for Scotland; Scottish Opera. Following its success, he continued as the Company’s Music Director until his retirement in 1987. His portrait and a bust can both be found in the foyers of the Theatre Royal.

Die Fledermaus, 1975
David Pountney’s production of Strauss’s Die Fledermaus reopened the Theatre Royal in 1975 and marked not only Scottish Opera’s ownership of the theatre having bought it from STV, but also the christening of the Theatre Royal as the company’s permanent performance home.

Madama Butterfly, 1976
Puccini’s Madama Butterfly was Scottish Opera’s first-ever production in 1962, at Glasgow’s King’s Theatre. It was 14 years later in 1976 that Peter Ebert first brought Scottish Opera’s Madama Butterfly to the Theatre Royal stage, as shown here.

Daniel Slater’s 1997 revival of Elijah Moshinsky’s 1988 production of Puccini’s La bohème. Peter Ebert directed Scottish Opera’s first La bohème in 1965, with Stewart Laing directing the company’s most recent production, which premiered in 2004.

The second revival of Núria Espert’s production of Verdi’s La traviata was directed by Peter Watson in 1996. It was the second production for Scottish Opera that Espert had collaborated on with set designer Ezio Frigerio and costume designer Franca Squarciapino, following Madama Butterfly in 1987.
